Vectorworks is a CAD/BIM system from Vectorworks, Inc. It provides a suite of 2D, 3D, presentation, and design tools for all phases of the design process.
Users can sketch ideas using straight lines, arcs, circles, rectangles, etc., just like traditional drawing board work. But they can also use elements such as walls, windows, cabinets, plants, streets, and spotlights. These objects can be displayed in 2D and 3D views using multi-window technology. 2D objects can also be drawn as "planar objects" in 3D views. 3D models can be created from 2D drawings and vice versa, e.g. by placing sections.
Vectorworks has a DXF/DWG and IFC interface and can import and export a variety of file formats. These include SketchUp, Revit, 3DS, c4d, EPix, Shapefile/SHP, SAT, Parasolid X_T, PDF, EPS, JPG, TIF, and BMP. Vectorworks also supports IGES, SAT, STEP, and STL formats, which can be used to transfer Vectorworks models to 3D printers or rapid prototyping machines. The built-in ODBC database interface allows objects drawn in Vectorworks to be linked to data in external databases such as FileMaker, Access, and MySQL. 3D modeling is based on the Parasolid modeling engine from Siemens PLM Software. Screen layout is accelerated by the Vectorworks Graphics Module, which includes multi-core support and intelligent object tessellation. The GDTF standard format has been co-developed for the event industry. Data can be transferred using the MVR file format. Vectorworks Architecture, Landscape, Spotlight, and Designer versions support Building Information Modeling (BIM).
Create client presentations with graphics features such as real line thickness, patterns, raster image fills, hatches, gradients, transparencies, mosaic fills, viewports, layout layers, and more. Sketch Style technology gives CAD drawings the look of hand-drawn illustrations.
For more advanced 3D rendering, Renderworks is available. The built-in renderer in Vectorworks can be used to create realistic images as well as images that look as if they were hand-drawn (watercolor, pencil, etc.). Renderworks features include global illumination, shadow studies, visible light and area lights, a library of well over 1000 textures, 3D raster image objects, environmental images, atmospheric effects, and support for HDRI and QuickTime VR. Renderworks is based on Maxon's Cineware and therefore generates a generic .c4d export format.
Project sharing allows multiple people to work on the same project. Office standards such as plan headers, stamp objects or symbol libraries can be managed centrally.
Vectorworks also includes a programming language called VectorScript, which allows you to program or record your own functions - from simple search scripts to custom commands and tools to intelligent objects. VectorScript is syntactically similar to Pascal. You can also create your own scripts using Python and Visual Scripting.
Vectorworks also includes structural elements such as layers, classes, references, groups, symbols, etc., associative dimensioning, an integrated database and spreadsheet, and solid modeling capabilities for solid models.
Vectorworks Design Suite includes the full functionality of Vectorworks Basic, Architecture, Landscape, and Spotlight. This version is primarily used by interdisciplinary design professionals.
